The Afghanistan War
December 24th, 1978, mostly known for the start of the internal conflict in Afghanistan between anti-communist Muslims and the Afghan communist government. Around more of 100,000 Soviet troops were controlling cities to support the government, in order to prevent rebellion and the spread of communism. The protests of the Muslim rebels, grew to all parts of the country, soon the United States were notified and supported the Afghanistan rebels, providing military aids. This event became brutal, almost a decade long to overcome the Afghan civil war. Mohammed Daoud, the Afghan Prime Minister hoped to reduce all threats by steering Afghanistan away from the Soviet influence and to improve all U.S relations.
Due to the arising conflicts, the Soviet Union was considered no longer invincible. Mikhail Gorbachev, president of the communist government, tried to end war by increasing Soviet troops, unfortunately that did not work and he soon realized that the war was hurting their economy, which made him sign a peace treaty. The last troops departed in 1989.
