Cold War Overview
The Cold War was a long period of tension between the communist countries of Eastern Europe and the democracies of the Western World. The west was led by the United States, while Eastern Europe was led by the Soviet Union. These were known as 'superpowers'. While these two superpowers never declared war, they fought indirectly in proxy wars, the arms race, and the space race. The Cold War lasted from 1945-1991, beginning not long after WWll ended, and came to an end with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. The proxy wars were fought between other countries, but with each side getting support from one of the superpowers. The Korean War, Vietnam War, Yam Kipper War, and the Soviet Afghanistan War were all proxy wars.
